When you make a web page, it is important to include images. They don't only make your page more attractive, but they help the person looking at your pages to understand what you want to say to them.
There are different types of images you can choose to use. You can take photographs with a digital camera and put them on your web page. You can scan your own artwork or photographs in a digital scanner. You can use clip art that you already have on your computer or which you can obtain from a CD-ROM. Don't forget that images you do not produce yourself may be covered by copyright, and you should acknowledge the source when you use them.
Wherever you get your images from, the technique for inserting them in your web page is the same. However, you do need to check the images are in a format a browser will understand. Generally, that means photographs should be .jpg images and other artwork should be .gif. Sometimes you may need to change the format of an image and you will need a special software package to do this.
Here is a page I have started to make about animals:

You will remember, I have suggested you should always check what your work looks like in a browser. When I looked at this page in Navigator it was like this:

You will notice the text is in a different place. When I inserted the picture, I used the Composer software to set where the picture would be displayed. I knew it would not look quite right in Composer, but I had to use the software to get the effect I wanted and then test it had worked.. Let's look at how to do this now.
| The first task is to decide where you want to insert your image. If it is going to be in the middle of the page, move your cursor to the line where you want to insert the image, and use the button on the format bar to centre the image or align it right or left. If you want to wrap text round the image, move your cursor to the beginning of the paragraph the image will appear next to - do this whether you will be putting the image to the right or left of the text | ![]() |
|
You now need to find the image you want to insert. Click the Choose File button and navigate to the folder and file you wish to insert and double-click on it. The file name and location will appear in the text box. Now is the time to decide how you want to arrange the text around your image. Choose from the two buttons on the right, depending on whether you want the text on the left or the right of your image. Then click OK. |

The image will appear in your web page. It may not look just as you expected - like my example at the top of this page. Therefore it is a good idea to save the page now and look at it in Navigator. Does it look as you expected? If yes, good. If not go back to Composer and right click on the image. You will see the Image Properties window again and can try again.

It may be the image is the wrong size for your layout. Click on the image and a black border will appear round it. If you move your cursor to one of the corners, it will change into a double-ended arrow. Press the left mouse button and keep it depressed, while you drag the corner to make the image larger or smaller. |
Open the web page you are working on and insert an image. Don't forget to save your work and check it looks as you want it to in Navigator.
