Bookmarks or Favorites

When you are looking for information on the Internet, or even just surfing casually, you will come across websites you want to return to again. You could get out your pencil and paper and make a note of the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) but there is a danger of mis-spelling and you may lose your note. All web browsers have a facility to keep a record of useful sites, and to organise the way you keep this record. This page describes how you can do this using Internet Explorer

Have a look at the top of the window in Internet Explorer - you will see Favorites appears on both the menubar and the toolbar. Try clicking on it and observe what happens. Notice as well the American spelling - this is typical of the Worldwide Web.

We are now going to use Favorites to store a bookmark. There is more than one way of doing this, but this is the way I find easiest.

We will assume you have arrived at my homepage - www.lizit.com and you wish to add it to your favorites.

Click on Favorites on the menu bar and a dropdown menu appears with a list of folders and pages you have previously bookmarked, or which were bookmarked as part of your software installation.

Notice that the top item on the dropdown menu is Add to Favorites. Click on this. A box appears saying that the page will be added to your list of favorites. Click OK. You have now created a bookmark.

If you wish, before clicking OK, you can change the name of the page to something more memorable to you by simply over-typing the contents of the Name box.

Sometimes you will be collecting a number of sites on a similar theme, and it would be convenient to keep them together, rather than to create a long list of all your favorite sites. You can do this by using the Create in button. Click on this and the Add Favorite box expands to show a list of folders. You may now either make your bookmark in an existing folder, or create a new folder using the New Folder button. When you click OK your bookmark will be saved in the highlighted folder.

Try creating some bookmarks now!

When you want to visit a bookmarked site, click on Favorites in the menubar and either click directly on the bookmark, or click on the folder containing the bookmark to expand it and then click on the bookmark. Your browser will open the bookmarked site.

Hint - you may find you are able to do this off-line as the site may still be stored in your browser's cache.
