Managing your internet cache

When you visit a web page your Internet browser will download a copy of that page to your hard disk and place it in an Internet cache.  The following instructions describe how to set up your Internet cache in Internet Explorer.

Step 1

Click on the Tools menu and choose Internet Options.

Step 2

A new window opens.  You may wish to explore all the options available here, but for the purpose of setting the cache, we are interested in Temporary Internet files.

Click on the Settings button.

Step 3

Another new window opens.

At the top of it you can choose how often Internet Explorer should check if the page you are visiting has been changed.  I use the automatic setting which checks the date the file was last modified against the date of the file in my cache.

In the bottom part of the window, you can determine how much of your hard disk you are happy to have occupied by Internet files.  I have maximised this, but most users would find 100 MB adequate for their needs.

Internet Explorer also makes it possible to save a whole web site for off-line viewing.

Click on Favorites on the menu bar and then Add to Favorites.

A new Window appears.  Tick the box Make available offline and click on the Customize button.

A Wizard starts which allows you to determine how much of the site you wish to cache, how often you want Internet Explorer to check for changes, and whether you also want external links caching.

Follow the instructions in the Wizard.

Remember you have to be online in order to download the site, but will then be able to read it offline.
